Michael Beckelhimer

Michael Beckelhimer is a Los Angeles-based freelance writer/producer and documentary filmmaker. He is currently writing and directing an independent documentary, «Literary Russia», about the role of classic literature in contemporary Russian society. He has produced Russian-themed episodes for The History Channel’s popular «Cities of the Underworld» television program.

The Cultural Fellowship supported research and production for the documentary film, «Literary Russia». During his two weeks in St. Petersburg, Michael shot many hours of footage.

«For a film about classic Russian literature, I have to have St. Petersburg as a backdrop. More important, the terrific people at the Foundation and Russkii Mir provided me with incredible access to places and people in the city. They not only provided support every step of the way for my project, but they made sure the entire group of Fellows had an enriching and fun experience together. I’m looking forward to returning to St. Petersburg many, many times to continue working with my new friends and colleagues».
