Ilya Prizel

Ilya Prizel, is a Professor of Political Science and History at the University of Pittsburgh. He is the former editor of the journal of East European Politics and Society, a journal referred to by the Times Literary Supplement as a “leading vehicle for publication and research on Communist and Post-Communist Europe”. Most of Prizel’s previous scholarly work focused on nationalism, and the construction of identity. His book National Identity and Foreign Policy: Poland, Russia, Ukraine was awarded the Shulman Prize in 1999. Prizel’s current project is a study of the cultural and social re-emergence of post-Soviet Saint Petersburg.

«The excellent study trip to Saint Petersburg organized by the Likhachev Foundation and Russkii Mir enabled me to reaffirm my romance with that magnificent, if tragic, city. The various interviews, possibilities to see artistic, scholarly and civic institutions operating from behind the scenes gave me a rare opportunity to discover undergrowth of dynamic cultural and social activity which is far from obvious, even to the seasoned observer. My book, tentatively titled «Saint Petersburg Splendor and Squalor: a Portrait of a Tragic City In Search of Identity», was immeasurably enriched by the trip organized by Likhachev Foundation».
