Mary Jo Salter

Mary Jo Salter is a writer (her sixth book «A Phone Call to the Future: New and Selected Poems»was published in 2008), an editor (she co-edited the 1996 and 2005 editions of «The Norton Anthology of Poetry»), and a teacher (she is Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in The Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University).

From 1984 to 2007, she taught in the English department at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. The poet Joseph Brodsky was one of her colleagues – until his early death in 1996. The goal of Mary Jo’s cultural fellowship was to go to St. Petersburg to see Joseph Brodsky’s places, and to write a poem or an essay about her late friend.

«Having just returned from an extraordinary trip to St. Petersburg, I’m already embarked on my writing project. I’m also now involved on helping others to plan a traveling international exhibit, tentatively called “The Places of Joseph Brodsky”, which would include photos, drawings, manuscripts, and other documents. Although my fellowship is now over, connections I made during my trip will, I know, help me to work with various institutions to make the Brodsky exhibit a reality».
