Laura Kaminsky

Composer Laura Kaminsky’s works are frequently performed internationally. She has received many commissions, fellowships, and awards as a composer and presenter from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, among others.
She is the Associate Artistic Director of Symphony Space, a multi-disciplinary presenting organization located in the heart of New York’s famed Upper West Side. Additionally, she is a professor of music composition at the Purchase College Conservatory of Music of the State University of New York.

Laura Kaminsky’s project is to present a marathon of music of the Soviet era, Wall to Wall Behind the Wall, at Symphony Space in May 2010.  During her time in Saint Petersburg she met with leading composers, musicologists, performers, and spent much time in the Conservatory of Music and the National Library in pursuit of interesting music not yet widely known in the U.S. to present on the marathon.

«My encounters with such a great a range of composers, from different generations and different aesthetic persuasions, gave me new insights into Russian music of the past 50 years through today.  Additionally, the assistance provided by the many experts at the National Library, the Conservatory of Music and the Pro Arte Foundation, helped me find unusual and unknown music that I am now considering for inclusion on the marathon.  As a composer, the opportunity to have my own music performed at the Dostoevksy Museum as well as broadcast on the radio was an honor, and even further deepened my appreciation of the rich musical and cultural life of this very vibrant and proud city».
