Cathleen Lewis

Cathleen Lewis is the Curator of International Space Programs and Spacesuits at the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum, one of the most-visited museums in the world.
Her primary project for the fellowship was to research the films of Pavel Klushantsev, a Petrograd native, who worked at Lennauchfilm for many years.  Lewis first ran across the name of Klushantsev when doing research on the cultural history of human spaceflight in the Soviet Union during the 1960s.  Klushantsev made films about space and spaceflight during the 1950s and 1960s that were noted for their advanced special effects techniques.

«Thanks to the Likhachev Foundation, I was able to make contacts with Mr. Klushantsev’s daughter and Lennauchfilm studio. I hope to re-introduce Klushantsev’s films to visitors in Washington and hopefully to residents and visitors of St. Petersburg.  In addition to my primary research project, the Likhachev foundation helped me establish contacts with the Artillery Museum and the Space Museum of the Museum of the City of St. Petersburg.  Each museum shares similar collections with those at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.   Based on these contacts, our museums will be able to find ways to exchange information and collections to the benefit of all our publics».
