Scott Ruby

Scott Ruby is Associate Curator of Russian and Eastern European Art at Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Gardens in Washington, D.C. He is currently planning an exhibition about the wide range of drinking customs in Russia and the beautiful objects made to accompany them. His exhibition is tentatively titled: From Samovars to Vodka Cups: the Art of Drink in Russia. In Russian life there was a theatricality associated with the consumption of beverages and the container was nearly as important as its contents. Scott Ruby’s exhibition will introduce these beautiful drinking customs to a broad American audience.

The Likhachev Foundation sponsored Dr. Ruby’s two week stay in St. Petersburg, which allowed him to meet with a wide range of museum directors and curators about his show and explore the storage rooms of various important museums with the idea of borrowing select objects to accompany the exhibition.

«I am forever indebted to the Likhachev Foundation and Russkii Mir for providing the opportunity and support to make my exhibition come true. It has been a wonderful research opportunity--but in a way I never dreamed possible--it has made connections which I am certain will last a lifetime.»
