Irena Grudzinska Gross

Irena Grudzinska Gross is teaching at Princeton University in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures. She also co-edits the quarterly East European Politics and Societies and wrote and edited several books on Eastern European culture and politics. In 2009, she published a book on the history and poetic legacy of the friendship between Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz and  Joseph Brodsky.  As a fellow of Likhachev Foundation, she continued her work on the poetry and life of Joseph Brodsky, especially on his relationship to St. Petersburg,  his native city.

«My stay in Saint Petersburg was a most enriching and fascinating experience. The Foundation opened doors to the city on every level and provided a matchless, concentrated look into its life, history and culture. At one institution after another the most expert and cultured people generously shared their time and knowledge enabling us to form connections that are sure to ramify in the future. The Foundation put me in contact with experts on Joseph Brodsky and with his friends who offered indispensable help for the completion of my project. More broadly, the experience laid the foundation for cultural contacts and cooperative work between me and my American colleagues on the one hand, and our new friends and collaborators in St. Petersburg. Likhachev Foundation people  were marvels of efficiency and thoughtfulness and tact. I want to thank most wholeheartedly everyone involved».
