Laurence Libin

Laurence Libin is emeritus curator of musical instruments at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and editor-in-chief of the Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments for Oxford University Press. For a forthcoming new edition of the Dictionary he is engaging Russian scholars to expand coverage of instruments and their makers from antiquity to the present day in Russia, the Baltic region, and Central Asia. The Cultural Fellowship enabled him to meet with colleagues and visit collections in several St. Petersburg institutions.

«The Foundation's vast range of professional contacts made my ninth visit to St. Petersburg the most productive ever. I was able to see previously inaccessible material and forge strong, reciprocal relations with colleagues that will endure beyond publication of the Grove Dictionary. Most importantly, the instrumental aspect of Russia's rich musical culture will now be better represented to readers in English than ever before. I am grateful to have received the Foundation's support, and honored to have been included among a cohort of remarkable Fellows whose interests greatly broadened my view of Russian culture.»
