Anne Kataneo

Anne is the dramaturg of Lincoln Center Theater and the creator and head of the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab. A three term past president of Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas, she was the recipient of LMDA's first Lessing Award for lifetime achievement of dramaturgy. In July 2011, she was awarded the Margo Jones Medal given annually to a “citizen of the theater who has demonstrated a significant impact, understanding and affirmation of the craft of playwriting, with a lifetime commitment to the encouragement of the living theatre everywhere”. Among the LCT productions she has worked on as a dramaturg, one of her favorites was Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia – the great trilogy about the lives of Herzen, Ogaryov, Bakunin, Belinsky, Turgenev, and Stankevich which played out against the background of the 19th Century Russia from 1840 – 1870.

My visit to St. Petersburg deepened a set of relationships that began, courtesy of the Likhachev Foundation, with the visit of theater artists from St. Petersburg to our Directors Lab at Lincoln Center Theater.  Over just two years, we have established a way for Russian stage directors to visit New York and meet 70+ directors from around the world, and the purpose of my trip was to explore the possibility of setting up a Directors Lab outpost at the Alexandrinsky Theatre, where artists from abroad can work in Russia. My visit was carefully planned by the Foundation and very collegial – wonderful fellow participants - and we saw everything and met everyone in this wonderful city. A highly productive visit, well organized and very memorable.
