Tessa Murdoch

Deputy Keeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum, has thirty-three years experience as a museum curator, from 1981-1990 at the Museum of London and from 1991 at the VandA. Her exhibition project, The World of the Russian Country House, reflects her fascination with the creative inspiration provided by this contrast to city life and her early experience as editor and contributor to the book Boughton House: The English Versailles, 1992, a celebration of one of England's greatest houses.

The Likhachev Foundation scholarship provided an introduction to the house museums of leading artists, composers and writers, including Repin, Rimsky-Korsakov and Pushkin. The provision of skilled translators made fruitful meetings at Peterhof Palace and the State Hermitage Museum possible. As a result, there are three possible exhibition projects with St Peterburg museums. In each case, thanks to the Likhachev Foundation, the VandA will be breaking new ground and working closely with these Russian museums to bring Russian expertise and collections to new Western audiences. My lasting memory of two weeks in St Petersburg is of the swallows diving and gliding over the skyline of St Petersburg, the breakfast view from our hotel. A symbol of freedom in the city's darkest times, the swallows epitomize the creative energy that the beauty of St Petersburg inspires. The interdisciplinary focus of the fellow 2014 Likhachev scholars contributed to this unique experience. I strongly recommend the Likhachev Fellowship.
