Jenny Carr

Jenny is chair of the Scotland-Russia Forum, a voluntary organisation based in Edinburgh which seeks to promote understanding of Russia and her neighbours with events, information and other activities.  Of particular concern is the absence of any Russian in Scottish schools, evidence of the lack of interest and understanding in society as a whole, and the SRF tries to counter this with taster classes in schools as well as other events designed particularly for school pupils.  A graduate in Russian Studies, and former exchange student in the USSR, Jenny worked in marketing before training as a teacher.

“I am extremely grateful to the Likhachev Foundation for giving me the chance to spend two weeks in St Petersburg.  My aim was to set up two projects, both intended to interest school-age children in aspects of Russian culture.  The first project is to plan performances in Scotland of “Upsala Circus”, a charitable project for disadvantaged children in St. Petersburg – and it was very useful to be able to do this in person and to visit the circus.  The second is the creation of materials about Pushkin for children with the Pushkin Museum.  I was able to work with the director and also the organiser of educational programmes and am hopeful that together we will create a suitable starter website – to be presented for discussion with teachers and others in London in October.

However the fortnight offered far more than this:  the opportunity to meet the other Fellows, an extraordinarily interesting and stimulating multinational group of arts professionals; the opportunity to participate in activities, particularly theatre visits, outside my personal programme; visits to schools with a view to arranging exchanges; work with the Assn for International Cooperation on the conference and other activities they plan in London and Scotland in October/November; an unprogrammed day at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum; and (not least) time to visit or revisit people and places I have known from earlier visits to the city. The generosity, informality, warmth and efficiency of everyone connected with the Likhachev Foundation underpinned everything.  Thank you!”
