Yu Nick Rongjun

Playwright and the Deputy General Manager for Shanghai’s only state-run theater company, the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre (SDAC). Since 2000, Mr. Yu has authored more than forty-seven works for stage and screen with performances in other countries as well as in China. Since 2005, he has been also the Chief Director of the Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival. The Bolshoi Drama Theatre (BDT) in St. Petersburg and Shanghai Center of Dramatic Arts decided to design a range of events to introduce the culture of contemporary China to the people of St. Petersburg and Russian culture to citizens of Shanghai. Nick Yu traveled to St. Petersburg to explore the possibilities to both bring BDT to China and to organize a festival of Chinese theater in St. Petersburg.

“It is my honor to get the fellowships for Russia culture program of the Likhachev Foundation of St. Petersburg, I may be the only one from Asia for this program since it began. I got so much in St. Petersburg in two weeks. Generally I got chances to know more about the theater academy, different theater companies, museums, festivals and so on, I met lots of artists, managers and masters there, I spent a really good time to explore in many performances, exhibitions and museums, I fell in love with this city immediately which has so much in history, culture and arts, I would love to make more things happened between St. Petersburg and Shanghai. Lots of ideas came from my mind when I were there, it is a great place to think more.

About the projects, I talked with the Bolshoi Drama Theatre, they may hold a Chinese arts festival includes the theater pieces from our theater soon, and we will bring their plays to present in Shanghai in nearly future. Besides that, I want to make the long term relationship between two theaters. Also I would like to bring our artists to the Theatre academy for the training and research soon. And I also found some plays for my festival in Shanghai. I am sure that we will find more chance to work together with the theater and artists in Russia in coming years.

Thanks again for the organizers the Likhachev Foundation and The Foundation of the First President of Russia Boris N. Yeltsin, you did such a fantastic work to organize a wonderful program for all the participants with different interests, we also enjoy very much for the friendship between participants and you, I do think this is a good beginning for the links and network between us. I will come back again soon definitely, I love this wonderful city and enjoy it so much”.
